I was driving down the Interstate 75 one day and saw a car with a sign on the back of it. I'm always interested in bumper stickers. I don't have any on my car, but I like to read them. It said, "This Vehicle is Powered by Biofuel." I thought, 'Hmm. I wonder what that is. I wonder where I could get a tank of that. Maybe it's cheaper than gasoline.' A few weeks later I was in downtown Chattanooga where I saw a bus with a sign on it saying something like this: "Powered by clean non-polluting Electricity." I thought, 'well, that's neat. Maybe that would be cheaper for me. Maybe that's a good thing.' Then I thought, 'You know, that's wonderful and it's exciting to think of all the new technology, especially when we are entering the energy crisis.
And then my pastoral mind shifted into gear. I thought of the spiritual illustration for you this morning. Now if you've been thinking, 'Well, the sermons have been just hitting me right between the eyes every week,' well, let this one hit you right in the heart. I thought of the spiritual energy crisis that we are in. We're in a spiritual energy crisis. It is in much evidence today. I thought of how nice it might be to see some type of a sign on each and every true Christian that might say: "Powered by Jesus!" Wouldn't that be neat? Shouldn't we be powered by Jesus? That should be the source of our power.
Jesus Christ is the source of our power. Powered by Jesus. What a vast difference it might make if every church member were one hundred percent powered by Jesus. That would be awesome. Not self-powered but Jesus-powered. Far too many of us live on our own steam when there is available for our use the awesome almighty power of Jesus. Are you living with His Power? You came to the right place today if you need the power of Jesus.
Come over here to 2 Peter. I want you to unpack some of the things in 2 Peter1. This is just an awesome verse. I want you to look at 2 Peter 1:3. It says, His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Now, look at that. God's power has given us everything we need for this life, and for godliness. So, you get everything you need here in Collegedale, Tennessee, and you've got everything you need for godliness, to live a godly life. God's power gives you everything you need.
And, here's how you get it: Continue reading verse 4. Through these he has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. So, how do we get the power? Read the Bible and listen to the Holy Spirit. God's Word. You need to read about Him. This is how you get the power: through the knowledge of Him, through the knowledge of Jesus. How do you get the knowledge of Jesus? You ought to have the Bible open every morning. You get the knowledge of Jesus by reading about Him. And then it goes on through verse 4. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. Have you got evil desires? You need to escape the corruption of those evil desires. You can through the power of Jesus Christ. If you're powered by Jesus, you can escape the corruption of the world. You can have the power to live the godly life, if you are powered by Jesus. That's just an awesome thought.
The greatest need of the church today is to tap into the awesome almighty power of God. We're living without power. Each sincere person here today at this communion service can tap into God's unlimited power. You can have that power. You can have that power today. You don't have to go home and be a victim of those old habits. You can live a victorious life through Jesus Christ. You can do it. We cannot afford to be without this power. For too long sin has gotten the best of us. We really need the power of God. We need the divine power in order to reflect the divine image of Jesus. Doesn't that make sense? You can't do it on your own.
Divine Power can help you reflect the Divine Image. Just as proper fuel brings your car to life, just so Jesus power will give you real life.
Come over here to John in your Bible. Jesus speaks about the Communion supper: John 6:53, 54 (NKJV). Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.
"Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
We must have the true powerful life that Jesus offers to keep us from falling for the devil's way. The devil lives here in Tennessee as well. If you don't want Jesus to control your life, then you must be powered by Jesus Christ. And you can be powered by Jesus. You can have His awesome power. You can have that eternal life. So, how do you get that life? Well, you get it, one thing, here at the Communion Service. There is life here. And, where is that life? That power is in the blood. Is there power in the blood of Christ? This is a symbol of the body of Christ and the blood of Christ right here. Here at the communion table we have this cleansing and this power through the filling of the Spirit of God.
My wife's car has been having some problems lately. She can be driving down the road and the gas gauge can read 'Half full' one minute and clear empty the next minute. There's a little bell that starts sounding, or a beeping sound: "You need gas! Stop at the nearest station." Or whatever it means to tell you. You've got to get gas. And then you're just back up half full again. We've been having this problem. It'll cost you five hundred dollars to fix it. Well, I think we'll just get used to it. But she can't tell if she's about out of gas, or if she is half full. And with the high price of gas, the difference of being full and being empty could be fifty dollars, you know. That's a lot of money. And, she doesn't want to run out of gas. She can't walk that far, so she has to keep track of the mileage. Then she knows if she's running out.
You know, in our spiritual life we want to live on a full tank of the power of Jesus. If your spiritual tank is empty you have come to the right place today. Dynamic power is available right here to transform your life. If you don't know if your spiritual tank is empty or full then you've got a bad problem. Right? Just like my wife has a problem with her gas gauge. You could be walking instead of flying, and you'll never get to heaven by walking, unless you walk with Jesus. Dynamic power is available right here in this service, right here today.
Come over here to Romans and let's read about this awesome power of God. Romans 1:16. I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes. That's pretty simple. If you could unpack that verse you'd have a lot, wouldn't you. It's the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes.
You must connect with the Power of God. You know, that devastation that Katrina hurricane brought to the gulf coast was bad. I think about New Orleans. That great city became disconnected from power. There was no electricity, no gas, no water in the pipes, no power. They were out of power. They couldn't put gas in the tanks of the police cars because they couldn't fill them up with no electricity. The pumps wouldn't work. The batteries went dead on their walkie-talkies. The cell phones wouldn't work. They were just out of power. There was no power in New Orleans. With no power that great city was brought down to the level of chaos. It might as well have been a large city dump. There was just nothing there. Without power, all those modern buildings are unhabitable. You couldn't live in them. In fact, you couldn't live in your house if you didn't have electricity, which means, no water. How could you live in that house? How could you heat or cool your house? Most of you couldn't. Without power, New Orleans was brought down to the level of the 1700s. Levees were powerless to hold back the raging waters. The only living beings to prosper are mosquitoes and germs.
Now, if you want the spiritual mosquitoes to prosper in your life, if you want the germs to prosper in your life, then you know what to do. Just disconnect yourself from the Power from on high. But if you want to live a godly successful life, then you need to connect with Jesus Christ, you need to be powered by Jesus. And you can be powered by Jesus. Jesus can be your power. How does the communion service connect you with that Power? Where is this Power? It's in the Blood. There is power in the blood of Jesus. Give your heart to Jesus. Become empowered by Jesus. So, as you partake of this symbol of the blood of Jesus Christ, pray that His power will come into your life, and into the life of your family, and into your very home and into your very community through you. There is power in the blood of Jesus. Give your heart to Jesus. Saturate yourself with the knowledge of Jesus. Pray for Jesus' power and you will have His power in your life.
We're going to separate at this time for the ordinance of humility.
